Coronavirus (COVID-19) Vaccine Information
Is the COVID-19 vaccine right for me?
The physicians of Northwest Gastroenterology have been carefully reviewing information related to the FDA EUA approved Pfizer vaccine and the upcoming Moderna vaccine. Both vaccines completed all three phases of clinical trials and were determined to be safe and effective. We recognize patients with inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune hepatitis, and those taking immunosuppressive medications were not represented in these trials. Data will not be available for these populations for some time. However, it appears the risk of contracting COVID-19 is higher than the risks associated with the vaccines. The current vaccines do not contain live virus and cannot cause infection. It is unlikely the vaccine will induce a flare of autoimmune disease but this is not certain.
We recommend all patients including those with inflammatory bowel disease and those taking immunosuppressive medications consider vaccination. Please discuss any concerns you may have regarding anaphylactic reaction with your primary care physician. If you are receiving corticosteroid therapy you may wish to discuss timing of your vaccination due to concern for decreased efficacy of the vaccine while on steroid therapy.
We do not have access to COVID-19 vaccines at this time.
