Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
IBD is chronic inflammation of the intestines, also known as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis.
Those who suffer from IBD often experience one or more of the following symptoms:
- Abdominal pain
- Urgent bowel movements
- Joint discomfort and/or pain
- Chronic fatigue
- Eye irritation
- Rectal bleeding
IBD is caused by chronic inflammation of the intestines. Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and indeterminate colitis are the most common underlying conditions in patients who are diagnosed with IBD.
Because it is caused by inflammation, IBD is always treated medically. The objective of treatment is always to eliminate and prevent inflammation, since prolonged bouts of IBD can do serious, even permanent, damage to the intestines. In addition to dietary changes, gastroenterologists often prescribe antibiotics, immune system suppressors, and anti-inflammatory drugs to quell chronic inflammation.
